“Before I started performing in festivals, I’ve never really been to festivals before,” McRae told Newsweek. “It’s honestly such an experience to see all the people who come and feel the energy of all the incredible artists.”
On day two of the festival, McRae took to the main stage to sing some of her biggest hits including “She’s All I Wanna Be,” “Feel Like S**t” and “You Broke Me First.”
With over 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify, McRae gained wider popularity from her 2020 hit, “You Broke Me First”—which she told Newsweek was her favorite song to perform onstage—that is 6 million streams away from 1 billion.
McRae released her debut album, I Used to Think I Could Fly, in May of 2022 and through her lyrics, discusses relationships and heartbreak with tearful ballads and upbeat melodies alike.
The “She’s All I Wanna Be” singer explained how she begins her songwriting process.
“I definitely get into the studio and I get someone play like a guitar loop or a piano loop, I’ll like freestyle melodies and just like kind of sing into the room, like, make a little voice memo. And then I’ll start spitting out like ideas of things that I’ve like, written down in my notes before just like run poems I’ve written.”
McRae was originally scheduled to open for Shawn Mendes on his upcoming tour, but the “When You’re Gone” singer in July canceled the remaining tour dates for mental health reasons. To take care of herself while on tour for the first time, the pop singer keeps in touch with people “outside her tour bus,” including friends, family and her therapist.
McRae teased a clip of a potential new song demo titled “Uh, Oh” to her 4.2 million TikTok followers. She told Newsweek that she put the song out there to see if her fans like it: “You never know what people are gonna think.”
McRae had some advice to give to people who want to start a music career. “I would say, don’t feel afraid to feel stupid or to feel crazy or feel embarrassing. I mean, I feel like people’s biggest fault is like caring what other people think. Everything in this world can be considered cringey or embarrassing and it’s like owning and making your own it’s gonna end up working.”
